It was a sad day indeed in Kew Gardens, Queens when Community Board 9 Queens voted down safety measures proposed by the DOT. The members of CB9Q unanimously voted to support the single-family homeowners association (Kew Gardens Civic Association) in spite of hundreds of residents on 116th, 118th and the surrounding streets begging for any safety measures to make their lives safer.

Is It Possible to Save the Climate and Boost the Economy?
|
A plan exists that will both preserve the climate and benefit the economy. Called Carbon Fee and Dividend, endorsed by bipartisan leaders, the plan features a fee, starting low and steadily rising, on fossil fuels, assessed where they enter the economy, at the well, mine, or border.

In order to not become too anxious by the opposition of a small minority to the Woodhaven Select Bus Service plans, we are hoping to include in the conversation, a much needed look at what causes collisions on all of our roadways.

‘Painted Nipples’ Should Remain in Times Square

Observing the ‘desnudas’ (naked women) one Saturday in Times Square, I couldn’t find anything vulgar or sluttish about them while they walked up and down the pedestrian plaza hoping someone will take a photo with them for a tip.

Aviation Industry Expansion and LaGuardia’s Central Terminal Building: The View from Northeast Queens
|
While LaGuardia Airport could surely benefit from an aesthetic upgrade, the upgrade did not have to mandate dramatic changes to the surrounding airspace. The new Central Terminal Building comes with accompanying flight route changes that will make noise abatement a near impossibility.

Eat To Live Or Live To Eat

Three friends met for lunch. One observes another drinking water between bites of her sandwich. This person got full at once. One friend remarked about the one who got full first, "She eats to live we live to eat." Does a person eat by the time clock?

Look at your cell phone bill. Just recently my daughter and I were forced by our conscience to cut our connection with our modern Samsung Note 4s’ which were leased. After nine weeks of being lessees, we were socked with a bill of $300 for two consecutive months. It was a bitter pill to swallow: this we couldn’t afford.

Are the Floodgates of the Public’s Access to Information and of Global Communication Irreversibly Open?
|
Still, small but persistent communities continue to prepare for a dystopian world war over information. They archive the Wikipedia daily and hypothesize alternate methods of mass-communication should the Web as we know it come under fire. Is their fear valid?

Dear Mayor de Blasio: Increase Funding to Increase Police Protection
|
Dear Mayor de Blasio:
The NYPD’s 102nd Precinct, which serves our area, is doing a great job addressing major issues with the manpower available to them. Violent crime is still down, historically speaking. The dedicated officers at the 102 go above and beyond the call of duty, often spending their own time to make our community safer. However, I am concerned with the quality of life issues in our community, which may not get the headlines. Everyday issues that every person has to deal with: the local mugging and car break-ins, where people don’t lose much and don’t report the incident because that would only cost them more time and anguish; the blasting of music, not only in the late hours of the night but during the afternoon and even morning hours, where people can’t even enjoy their back and front yards and feel threatened by the remarks and looks when approaching noisy neighbors asking them to be considerate of their neighbors.
